Let's take a moment of silence, everyone, to remember and appreciate the unparalleled gift of literacy!

(to remember the past, esp. for women, the poor, and other groups who were either not rich enough, or discouraged from learning to read...)

Interesting... I thought I was posting in "education." But judging by a couple of the replies, I was posting in "Idiots Only... lol. Guess this is what happens in a rich, free country -- people lose sight of what they have.

Hi..
From what I have read, about this...most of them remember symbols, and certain letters to know what something is, or what it says...
You can read a sign that says "Open! Please come in!" ..
They see it as a common sign, recognize the O and the 2 !'s, and know the place is open..
>>>>>
Or other signs, that are really common like a "Stop"sign"...or that the "red hand" symbol and the white "person walking" symbol means to walk across the road or not.".... In addition, many of the illiterate folks use colors as a signal to do something, or not, or where they should go or not... And along with that, symbols that are commonplace is also used as many are universal, and they just memorize and make their way...
>>>>>
Also, some idle chit chat gets them their info... You'd be surprised how many times in your past.. that some stranger asked you something, and you never gave it a second thought...
>>>>

Surprisingly, they can get around in life very well...;) They just can't read the latest : "Harry Potter book", back to front on their own...
>>>>>>

I know a lot of adults that can't read, but they are either "Mentally Retarded" or "Developmentally Disabled". They function in society just fine, what they can't do for the..mselves they have staff that do it for them....!

Hope, this helps!

My regards!

It was as recent as the '80's when girl were discouraged from taking High School classes that were typically male dominant like computer programming and architecture. Girls need to be taught at home how to voice their opinion and make their opinion count.

If I couldn't read I'd have a very boring life, since it seems everything I do revolves around reading.

I don't even want to think about what it would be like not to read! It is my favorite thing to do. Would life be worth living?
