What do you think the percentage of illegals that would tell a lie during this "screening process" is?

Trust joe to ask intelligent questions. I think you have a point. 50% would lie. And it would be the ones who are felons, the ones we really want out of the country.

Well, I can't logically support amnesty, I just feel that taking someone's job, location, support system, etc is a big thing and that our government has culpability for some of the good sort being here. So I'd go with it if the problem were solved, only for those here and only if screened and the process would not be a matter of asking the illegals.

First, there would be a five year temporary period during which if you were convicted of any crime or are shown to be in a gang, you would be deported. (My screening system includes misdemeaners and gang affiliation, crime or not.) Anyone with a record of conviction or gang affiliation wouldn't even get that far.

Right now Mexico doesn't take its criminals from jails back without a fight (or foot dragging to the nth degree) Sending back 302,000 a year from our state and local jails as well as the ones we already send from federal prisons would be a good thing, by me, and would raise quality of life for everyone here.

If we did give amnesty for the good sorts here, we could make Mexico's and other countries's commitment to taking these bad sort back not only a requirement for passage, but a condition of end of the temporary period in order to grant full residency (not citizenship and not to bring more here.)

However, I think we need border security, a usable employer data base, interior enforcement (no more sanctuaries) and dismantling of the employment and benefit magnets first. Otherwise more will just come.

Laughingly "I" have said that in the past. I now say Amnesty with strict guidelines.

One of the reasons I don't think a screening process will work is actually one of the reasons I don't think mass deportations will work. No one will line up to get screened JUST like no one will line up to pile into a bus or plane to be sent home to their country of origin.

How do you find them to screen them? Look how long it took for the authorities to locate a handful of stray Egyptians, who actually HAD documents when they arrived ... And who is going to pay for it? Screening means background checks .. fingerprinting and photographing ... medical screening ... and financial eligibility screening ... legal immigrants have to pay good money to get all that done ... who, provided we can even find them, is going to foot the bill?
