why when a bird hears a sound does it start whistleing?

I leave the radio on while I'm not home. My cockateil will sing with the music & certain commercials will set him off. The latest one is the Wendy's commercial that starts with a whistle. I used to leave this nature channel on that played just sounds of nature on the tv. He picked up some of the various chirps & songs that were played on there.
