First see if your bookstore carries the Not for Tourist Book for Atlanta, It is a really neat guide of all of the areas in town, broken into sections. Better yet, just click the first link below.
If you're into history, then may I suggest the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead, and the Swan House. Lenox Square is an okay shopping place, but I'd avoid it on Saturday afternoons. You might even get a kick out of the CNN Studio Tour.
Our local transit service, MARTA, has just launched a Tourist Loop that pretty much covers the downtown area. Since you're into architecture, you might want to stop by the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, which had the very first atrium of any hotel anywhere in the world.
I'd also suggest Virginia-Highlands and Little Five Points, two distinctive areas known for its intriguing little shops. Enjoy!

Definately visit the Georgia Aquarium, it's the largest in the world and it's amazing! You can visit the World of Coke (though I have never been ther personally), I hear it's a very interesting tour. Fernbank Museum is nice to visit and they have an IMAX theatre there as well.
Shopping I'd suggest going to Phipps Plaza and Lennox Mall, they're basically right next to each other in Buckhead, just watch out for some of the snooty people with their noses in the air, lol.
Do aviod some parts of Buckhead later at night and walking alone downtown/Olympic Centennial Park at night (just to be safe). You'll know the other places to aviod just by seeing them.
I hope you have fun!

The High Museum of Art is wonderful. The Atlanta Symphony may be performing at Woodruff Arts Center. You may also enjoy the Botanical Gardens. The orchid house is usually worth admission. Fernbank Science Museum is good. I really suggest the Georgia Aquarium. It is the worlds second largest. Check out their website. And, some of the best places to eat you will find. If you like dessert and coffee...try Cafe Intermezzo on Peachtree. Great atmosphere. Have fun. I live over two hours from Atlanta and often drive over just to spend the day.

Stone Mountain is nice, 6 flags, white water, the GA aquarium, lots of giant malls, most of better areas are around north side of town, lot of bad areas around west and south side of town. some areas of downtown bad too. traffic is a nightmare on interstates in morning and evening rush hrs. people will run over you if are doing 50-60 on interstates.
