Its usually pretty hot and humid here during this time of year and into mid/early September. Lately though we've been expirencing milder temperatures and it hasnt been humid and its been sunny. It does get kind of cool at night but its not necassary to like carry a sweater or anything like that if your going to be going out. A lot of places are air-conditioned so people usually wear jeans/shorts if its really hot or if they just feel like it.

I'm a New Yorker and wear shorts but really just because shorts have been really 'in' this year. When I go out at night I always wear heels, but not everyone does. I usually carry a sweater if I know I'm going to be on a long bus or train ride because they (usually) get kind of cold.

It totally varies. It is pretty hot and humid generally this time of year. It rains occasionally, but when it does, it's like three days of on and off downpours with drizzly cloudy weather in between. When it is sunny it is beautiful clear skies. Sometimes it's just gorgeous and crisp like in the low 80s. At night it does not usually get too cool like in New England, it stays pretty warm at night.

New Yorkers do not wear shorts (this is my observation from living here forever). I can spot a tourist because they all wear shorts (and those ugly mom shorts too or golfing dad shorts). Women wear skirts or sun dresses or pants, and men wear pants still but sometimes they'll wear shorts. I think it's mostly because everyone who lives here is going to and from work and you can't wear shorts to work. But tourists are on vacation and wear shorts.

We all wear comfortable shoes for sure. It's RARE you see some women parading around in four inch heels. It's not unusual to carry a sweater or longer shirt to put over whatever you're wearing when you go into air conditioned places... because sometimes they are very cold. Especially restaurants and theaters.

August can be slightly cool at night (70-degrees), but you still won't need a light sweater unless you're sensitive to temperature. You'll definitely need a thin shawl or sweater in September.

August and September is the best time to be here. The sunlight is clear and intense but it's not unbearably hot (85d). You can sense the change of seasons is coming.

It's still summer here in NYC. The weather is usually pretty hot and humid, however we've been experiencing milder temperatures the last week and a half. You won't go wrong with summer gear since it never gets cold at night or early morning.

Also take into consideration where you are coming from. Where I am from, New York is considered very chilly, so I take a jacket and trousers no matter the season. If you are from a northern area dress normally, but if you are from a hotter climate then I suggest a jacket at least, even if it is August.

it depends on what you are doing. the theatres can get really cold. sometimes it rains. it can get hot and sticky so a loose shirt is better than a tight one.
i saw a guy walking up broadway on monday wearing a red satin lengerie (sp?) skirt kinda thing. i guess he hadn't done laundry in a while.
