Decorators typically charge by the hour. For a skilled decorator with good credentials expect to pay at least $75.00/hour. This will pay for itself many times over if the creativity and design ability of the decorator leads to considerable added value to your home.
I would, however, make a point of looking at the decorator's finished product in several homes before making a major commitment.

If you're concerned about the cost, many stores (I think Lowes is one of them) where you can take in a picture, and "try on" colors in the room using a digital system they have.
Since you only want to change the paint color, why ask someone else? Go try on a few colors for your space, and see what you like!

yep where i live its 75 an hour for an average desighner and for a top level one you can double that, do your research you dont want to hire someone who does mostly contemporary if your tastes are traditional...different decorators have their own fortes so find one that fits your taste and style.

It depends on who you get. It can vary anywhere from hundreds to even thousands. Try going to Ethan Allen. They make the best recommendations. http://www.ethanallen.com/ea/com.ethanallen.ecom.HomePageServlet
