Go to the web site of the manufacturer of the sound card and download an XP compatible driver.

All the Dell Optiplex's that I ever worked on, all boot up with FULL sound, because they were biuilt to boot in Linux!!!

For the best time call: http://pclinuxos.com

Otherwise, if you are nearby, I might move my stack of ten of them to get al lthe XP drivers... Oh! Wait! XP never had a driver for that Sound Card!!! You see, none of the lock-in vendors even give a crap about your 'old' equipment!!! They made the chip, sold the system drivers, for Win98, ME, and, maybe Win2k, and moved on!

So, you either run Linux, or you install a modern PCI sound card and the drivers that come with it! Make sure you turn off the sound chip on-board, if you attempt to install a sound card!

Me? I run Linux on anything, and everything!
http://ipcop.org is on my homebuilt 233 Mhz Firewall/router!

I have a Dell GX150 system and run xp without any problems. As far as I'm concerned your problem is your installation disk..... It's not normal that an XP installation take 2 days!!

According to Dell's site your computer has the Crystal Semiconductors (Cirrus Logic) CS4236 sound chip.

I couldn't find ANY drivers for XP anywhere though. Newest operating system I could supported was Windows 2000.....

The link below lists the Spec sheet for your copmputer
