Some of them even contradict eachother in matters of faith.
Why?

Luther was really scrupoulos, if he had trusted in the Mercy of God and that his sins were forgiven through the sacrifice of Christ there wouldn't be any protestant denominations today we would all be members of the one Church today.

"If Christianity is true, why are there so many denominations?"
In the early 1500s, a German monk named Martin Luther was so conscious of his sins, he spent up to six hours in the confessional. Through study of the Scriptures he found that salvation didn't come through anything he did, but simply through trusting in the finished work of the Cross of Jesus Christ. He listed the contradictions between what the Scriptures said, and what his church taught, and nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Martin Luther became the first to "protest" against the Roman church, and thus he became the father of the Protestant church. Since that split, there have been many disagreements about how much water one should baptize with, how to sing what and why, who should govern who, etc., causing thousands of splinter groups. Many of these groups are convinced that they are the only ones who are right. These have become known as Protestant "denominations." Despite the confusion, these churches subscribe to certain foundational beliefs such as the deity, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says, "...the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal - the Lord knows those that are His" (see 2 Timothy 2:19).

The denominational splits are thoughht to occur along lines of doctrinal disagreement, but I see those disagreements in many cases get resolved and the denomination stays the same. What I have found in exploring this issue is that even denominations which are in all ways in agreement on matters of faith still find differences in their preferences and emphases. One may emphasize missionary work where another emphasizes internalized nurture. One may emphasize joy in worship where another emphasizes the sermon for teaching.

One thing I have definitely noticed is that when I go to a disaster area, I find all denominations striving together to help those people who are in need. The atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, satanists, Mormons and agnostics are never there. But you always find the Baptists, Salvation Army, Church of Christ, Seventh Day Adventists, and so on, and they work side by side and they even pray together and worship together right there. Recently I have even come across Jews in the disaster area, although their only purpose was to retrieve the bodies of slain Jews to handle rites for the deceased, they weren't actually doing any aid. well, it's just my experiences, anyway....

I believe that there is confusion in interpretation. There are so many opinions in the world about life, politics and religion, and the innumerable churches and denominations is a product of this uncertainty. As a result, there is contradiction and, sometimes, there are heated feelings toward another group for their belief.

What humors me is that we believe we, through our opinions, discussions, and collective conclusions, can create God or customize who and what he is to our liking or desire. This is one reason there are so many beliefs. If he exists, shouldn't he be something? Something that is factual and that can be understood by everyone without contradictions or personal opinions?
So, in reality, if he exists, we subtly decieve ourselves by believing the opinions and understanding of others who are trying to understand and interpret who God is.
We can't be satisfied with this, we need to find truth.

I personally believe in God. I believe that God has revealed who he is on many occasions in a way that we can know it is truth and it is from Him. The Bible some evidence of this process he uses because it was written by those people he revealed Himself to--the prophets (see Amos 3:7). God has had authorized spokespeople to reveal truth to the rest of us since the beginning of mankind. It is easy to conclude that even while there were people who had truth in the days of the Bible, there were still others who had their own opinions and beliefs contrary to the truth. This is similar to what we see today.
There are times when God has not had a prophet on the earth, due to our lack of obedience or unwillingness to listen, and at that point we are left to our own opinions or beliefs which fall short of the truth (there is a prophesy of this in Amos 8:11-12).

Today, I believe that God has a prophet on the earth, and while many are caught up in the many protestant christian denominations (as you have observed), the truth is available to a person who is willing to listen and find out for themself.

Jesus said himself that their would always be different denominations but as long as they were working for the good of the Kingdom of God that they should be supported in their efforts by all Christians.

One reason is that people have gone by what they think, not what God says. Man, in God's eyes is a false god. Godcreated man, but man choose Satan's way in the Garden.
