My opinion is that this belief that spans any society at any time is proof that there must be something out there larger than we can understand. Therefore, there must be a god or goddess (or multiple gods and goddesses) because everyone believes it, no matter how developed or where they originate from.

1) People like to anthropomorphize. If you look at most concepts of "god", you'll find they are all vague anthroporphic beings. Man made his gods in his own image.
2) People don't like loose ends. There's a lot that people don't know. The idea that some being in the sky has all of this under control is attractive. We don't like to think we're on a tiny rock hurtling through space.
3) People are egocentric. They like to believe they are somehow separate from the animals and that, in some way, this whole universe was created for their benefit.
4) People love judging others. Religion has ready-made lists of rules people can judge others by. A man saying, "You should do this!" doesn't carry much weight. However, if he can say, "This book was written by GOD and it says for you to do this!", people are more likely to listen. There are those that like the power religion gives them and others who like being comforted by following them.
5) People have a hard time with certain questions, like "What is it like when you die?". Religion gives ready answers. They are all made up answers, but any answer is more comfortable than none.
6) Religion is very convincing on an emotional level. If you notice the words people use when talking about their religion or trying to convince others of their religion, they mostly phrase it in terms of emotions. When you back them into a corner with facts, they resort to "You have to have faith", which is just wishful thinking. That's just another emotional argument.
7) Trillions of things happen to us each second. Out of those trillions of things, a good number of them are really unusual. People have a tendency to take unusual things and ascribe supernatural causes for them. Even when things happen that aren't unusual, our brains are good at finding patterns in them. We'll look at the sky and see faces in clouds. That's just because we've evolved to recognize faces easily. But someone will look at a piece of a grilled cheese sandwich and say it's a picture of Jesus and sell it on ebay.
There are many other reasons people believe, also. I've only touched the surface here. That's why religion is so popular, even though there are no gods.

Many people need to believe that there is something higher than them. Whether there is or isn't, that is for the individualy to deicde. People interpret the bible, the koran or whatever differently. Some people say that if you don't believe in something that you are a sinner and will go to hell. Others say that you just have to be a good person to "get into" heaven. And then there are the people that don't believe in God. The truly good people will believe that no matter if you belive in God or not, they respect your beliefs.

You are wrong, not all societies have Gods. Primitive or developed. Not enough time or inclination to discuss. But the answer is No.

because people don't want to believe that we just die, and thats it. People need something to look forward to, and give them hope when times are hard. When a mother loses her child she doesn't want to think hes just lying in the dirt forever, its much more pleasant to believe that a god has embraced her child, and one day she will see him/her again. Also people don't like the theory of evolution, and a creationism is an alternative to that belief. Basically what I'm saying that I think for most the belief in a higher power is all about hope.
( I really don't know about any non-christian religions so I can't comment on those)

Nobody wants to die. Nobody understands everything around
them.
The combination would naturally make people WANT to believe
in the supernatural and that somebody was controlling it.
The idea that just because I don't understand something today
doesn't mean I won't understand it tomorrow is not something
you can usefully comfort yourself with in the proverbial foxhole
or at the death of your loved one.
By the way, the above statements do not preclude the existance
of God or the supernatural - just explain why people would
want them to exist.
By definition: We cannot know!
Militant agnostic: I don't know and neither do you!

I believe it's because people can sense there is more to life than just what is seen. At some point, there comes a time in person's life when they question where this whole human race came from. Whatever the conclusion, one must come to accept that we are not here by chance and that something greater than our comprehension is out there.

The need to believe in a deity is inherent in human nature. In Paleolithic times the God's were the sun, the moon, the cycles of the year etc. Every since then we've needed something, other than ourselves, to believe in. The lack of such belief has resulted
in a feeling of powerlessness--like a child who is abandoned by his parents.

Good question. The reason starts or started in they dreams. Dream state is a higher state of consciousness beyound the physical. Because they wonder why someone should be sleeping on the bed & yet still be going about actively somewhere. So, they feel there are spiritual beings beyound them which they can contact for help.

There is only one God---the Lord God who is Jesus Christ. All other gods are false and are imaginations created by the devil. People are easily deceived into believing that a personal god is someone or something that they have to see and touch. Romans chapter 8 says that hope that is seen is not hope, for what a man see, why does he yet hope for it? True hope or faith in God is hope in the unseen. Jesus loves you.
