It depends where on the plane your seat is located.
They try to board the back of the plane first and gradually work up to the front (except for therich sob's in 1st class of course who always get to go on first).
For example, I recently flew American Airlines and was assigned Row 10 which is pretty close to the front of the plane, so I was given Zone 6 for boarding which means I was in the last batch to go on board.
Of course, the advantage to this is that you are then the first to get off and I think that's better than boarding first.
If you have special needs (like you have little kids, or have trouble walking) then they will board you first.
As far as getting a seat that you want, if you book online, you can select a seat at the time of booking.

Weight and balance is an issue with all aircrafts. When they are assigning your seats they typically begin from the rear of the aircraft forward, because alot of weight needs to be in the back (according to the airline I worked for flying MD-80's and MD83's) You can always ask for a seat up front, just say that you get sick in small spaces, or you will be in a huge hurry once off the aircraft because you will already be running late for a meeting. Ive seen it a million times. people will do anything to get what they want. So you might just be getting to the airport too early. If the flight is full they randomly place people, so it can be different.
Hope this helps.
Have a safe flight.

It depends on the Airline's policies. For example, Southwest Airlines does it by what number passenger you were to check-in on a flight. Then from there they divide it up into group A, B, and C. To give an example, if you passenger number 65 out of 140 passengers to check in, you would be in Group B and wait in Line B to board the aircraft. Not all airlines do this however. On Alaska Airlines, passengers are assigned seats when they book their tickets. When it comes to boarding, they board pre-boards, families with small children, first class, and Gold Member/V.I.P. clubs members to board before they call for all Main Cabin Passengers. Again, all airlines do it differently, but I hope this helps you.
