Im going to visit my relative in states.Could I just buy 1 way ticket as I am going to be there a couple of months and I am probably going to Europe after that.My plans are not definate so I dont want to buy the return tix yet.

Not necessarily, it may depend on the country you are from. Buying a return ticket does not guarantee you will use it, so its pointless - what to do about people driving?? They sure don't have return tickets!

However, the custom agent will ask you why you do not have one and when you plan to leave the USA.

Be prepared to answer questions about your living arrangements in and outside the USA and work situation abroad.

You may call a local travel agency from where you live, or the american consulate in your country. They are aware of the technicalities you may encounter.

If you plan to travel using the Visa Waiver, you should have a return ticket:
"If arriving by air or sea, they are traveling on an approved carrier ...and have a return trip ticket to any foreign destination other than the U.S. or adjacent islands..."

Sorry, you need to purchase a return ticket with a firm booking.
Or proof you are going to leave the States.
