This is not really a 'violent' question, I'm just curious if armed atom-cartridges can be used in firearm's and not just in missiles.

By 'make' I mean not only just a new kind of bullet, but modified to FIT a shooting weapon. Perhap's it not even a invention, just an edition of something with atomic powering. And no, I'm not plannin' to do'ris myself. Heh....how could I have access to that? Pssh...just shootin' blanks into the air on this one...

depleted uranium does not ahve the bang the question is looking for. Depleted Uranium is twice as dense as lead and can deliver more kinetic energy, but is not capable of underging a fission reaction.

There are two problems with a nuclear fire arm.

One is critical mass. You need a minumum amount of uranium, plutonium or whatever to have a nuclear explosion. The sie iw about the size of a grapefruit...too big for a bullet.

The other problem is even more practical. Imagine a nuclear handgrenade or pistol. The range is limited from tens to hundreds of yards.

The blast form even a small yield weapon is a half mile minimum.
Fire your gun and you die.

Um, they already have nuclear bullets that shoot from a gun. It's called depleted uranium. There are thousands of spent shells in iraq right now. Search google.

They have also made a fission nuclear weapon called the davy crocket back in the 1950s. It was basically a shoulder mounted missile launcher (similar to what they're firing into israel from lebanon) but modified with a nuclear explosive payload of around 10 to 20 tons of TNT. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davy_Crockett_(nuclear_device)

Atomic or nuclear bullet. Get real. Guns defend a great many people. If guns were bad in and of themselves neither the police or military would have them I always figured an idiot would think a nuke is the same. Congratulations you're it. Nuelear weopens are designed only to destroy and no other purpose.

The smallest gun that you can make a nuclear weapon for is a 200mm howitzer. Even if it were possible to fit a nuclear device into a smaller caliber weapon you would have the problem of being too close to the device when it detonated. All of the previous work on nuclear artillery shells however was abandoned after the development of Tomahawk cruise missiles.

It could probably be done. Look into the Atomic Cannon. There were actually something like 23 of these made and maybe 7 that are still around. I believe the bore was about 11". There are lots of scary looking devices at the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque, NM.

I do not think it is possible due to the size of the bullet. For a nuclear reaction a specific amount of material is needed in a specific volume. No weapon is big enough

Heh....Speaking of which... How about just leaving this idea alone and do something else....
