Most states don't require that you get a cat license like you have to for a dog. Cat shots are in the area of $50-$70. This is not a one time cost, cats, like dogs, need shots every year to stay healthy. With a stray, most vets want to do a thorough exam to make sure his is a fit pet, and the exam is an additional cost, as is the necessity of spaying and neutering the pet. Make sure you factor all this in when making the decision whether or not to keep him. If you simply can't afford it, call your local Humane Society and take the cat there.

The primary issue is not the shots as long as it isn't a kitten where the shots are a must.
You do not want an intact male in your home for sure so that needs has to be ruled out. Also tests for feline leukemia or feline immuno deficiency disease. This is mandatory if you have any other cats. Cats with leukemia can live good and relatively long lives in a protected, indoor only home.
If the cat is to live outdoors at all the rabies shot is necessary for your protection, the cat's, and your community's.
So it is hard to estimate what your expenses would be with this cat.
It is a great and warm, loving thing you are contemplating doing. I hope it works out for you and him.

Shots, neutering if needed and a full exam should cost about $150-200. You could go to a Humane Society clinic and get it done cheaper. Also if the cat is already neutered that will knock 60-90 off the bill.
Do not declaw! Think about having your fingernails pulled off. Not a pretty picture- we humans whimper when we tear a nail too low, forget about having it removed. You can talk to the vet about claw slipcovers when you bring him for shots if that is a concern.

You need to get him neutered so he won't start spraying in the house. Most cities have a low cost or free spay and neuter clinic in order to keep the pet population down. They usually give your pet a checkup and immunizations for a minimal fee. I got a free neuter for my cat and I paid about $150 for his shots, his FIV test, fecal test and flea medicine. PAWS was the clinic that I went to. You can do a web search for low cost spay and neuter clinics in your area and call to find out if they perform other services as well. You probably won't need to register him as long as you keep him indoors.

My vet charges 43 dollars for the office visit. Then depending if the cat is indoors or outdoors the vaccine prices will vary. If indoors rabies is required by law and feline distemper is recommended. Rabies is 18.00 and distemper 17.00. Of course every office charges different. I would think it might range a total around 50 to 80 dollars. I f outdoors you may also want the felv, fiv, and fip vaccine and this would be more costly.

I just wanted to say that you are a very nice person to take a cat in off the street. I got 1 of my cats that way, he was a wild kitten. And now, 6 years later, he is a nervous 12 pound cat, but I don't regret rescuing him.

Depends on where you go. I just paid $34 at the mobile shot clinic. Call around, some places are a rip.
