as in grow up literally?
If im going to answer this...it's because there's a lot more things kids can do now compared to your time. Information are now available and is given to children at even a young age.
Kids mature faster or gain more knowledge at a young age that enables them to do things kids (before) cant do

The train. YEAH! NO KIDDING!
In 1850, puberty occurred for boys at 16 years, and for girls, 14 years.
The train brought food that was out of season and region and our evolution responded to the better variety in our diet by reducing the average age of puberty every twenty (or so) years.
That is why we can now see second graders with breasts.

Because parents are not around to teach their kids. They would rather earn 2 incomes than make sure their children have all the support and direction they need. Or kids only have a mother and no father when her live-in boyfriend finds another younger woman and leaves her and the children. Kids need a mother and a father and one of them raising them. Not home alone or a stranger in a day care.

Children suck, being a kid is amazing but having them bites. They are loud and obnoxious to the point of where you want them to grow up faster, therefore they do.

Pop culture.
We are sexualizing kids younger and younger. Don't believe me? Watch what the kids are watching on TV. Listen to what they're listening to on the radio.
I read a question earlier where a 12 year old described herself as "sexy."
Frankly, it's pretty damn disturbing.
