The problem goes deeper than his unwillingness to recognize that summer vacation is over. We all have difficulty getting back to work mode, and no, leeches won't help in this situation.
What is there about school that he wants to avoid? Most kids, by this time of year, are anxious to get back. They are bored with summer activities, they miss their school chums, and (even though they groan about it) they are excited about starting a new year. Obviously, something in this equation isn't working for your son. Staying home isn't very satisfying socially, because all his friends are back in school.
Instead of leeches, sit down with him and invite a frank discussion of why he doesn't want to go back to school and what would correct the situation.
Your suggestion of leeches was innovative, and in another situation, might be effective, but for this one, it's more important to find out why school is not appealing.
Good luck!

Rule in our house? If you have a fever over 100 degrees F, you get to stay home with NO benefits... just sit on the couch and do nothing. No phone. No computer. No TV. (If they're REALLY sick, I slack up on those rules, of course...whatever they feel like!!) If they're not sick, either they won't have a fever or the thought of spending all day with mom, doing nothing fun, is usually enough to send them to school.
You don't say how old your son is... if he's in elementary school, it's time to take a firm stand on what your rules are about school/no school. If he's in a higher grade, he needs to know you still hold that standard!

Go to the school and discuss the situation with them. Maybe he was being bullied last year and doesn't want to go back to it. Is he able to keep up with his classes, he might have had trouble keeping up last year and the more advanced material this year will bring scares him. You can't fake a fever, take his temp and show him, then ask him "why" he doesn't want to go.

Are you sending the leeches to school in his stead?
Or having them teach him his lessons?

That is such an awesome idea. The other option is to give him alternatives. Show him what people with no GED make, or tell him how much yardwork he'll have to do ;)

Tell him that if he's sick, he's going to stay in bed ALL DAY with no games or TV or anything else FUN, because "he needs to rest". If he keeps it up, schedule a doctors' visit so he can get POKED WITH NEEDLES TO TAKE BLOOD and make sure that he's ok...
got it? ;-)
