It is based on the insecurity of the men in their societies. They feel that unless they mutilate a female, she might enjoy sex, which to their way of thinking, is a bad thing. In their philosophy, only men should enjoy the act. They think it will prevent women from cheating, since sex becomes so painful for them.

It's really an evil, anachronistic practice that should be outlawed worldwide.

Circumcision is banned from islamic countries, there is debate over the prohet saying that circumcision is not required but preffered for girls but it's not proven as the prohphet (PBUH) never circumcised his daughters
it is however banned and punishable by law in islamic countries, and the few people who do it do it because of ignorance mainly and they are done in mo way under the health ministry acceptance

It is not strictly a muslim practice... There are cultural superstitions involved...but it is actualy for control... it is to make it so that, suposadly, the woman will have not sexual urges and be less likly to run off with some other stud. It often makes the sex act very painful for the woman... but the men of those cultures do not care about their women except as slaves any way.

female circumcision is advised in their religious canon. There is much debate over it...in some countries where female genital mutilation is a huge problem, they seem to ignore a line in the korean that says "reduce, but not destroy".

I personally think its all vile and barbaric.

They're not supposed to be.
It's done a lot in Africa, but FGM (female genital mutilation), as it's called, is not encouraged. The belief is that women are 'cleansed' and 'purified' in this way.
