I would think that that would be a very noble profession.
To have a job thats purpose is to save lives.

It's a good field to get into, as you get to rescue people. But it's not a field in and of itself. You can't go into the navy just to be a SAR swimmer. It's a training regimen that you go through later, after you've completed boot camp and most likely, when you get assigned to your first ship. It would help you out in the civilian world once you got out, if you live near the coast, or any lakes or rivers that have a lot of recreational areas.

The Navy does not have a specific SAR rate for the surface fleet. Fixed wing pilots train in search patterns and air drops. Rotary wing pilots recieve more detailed training in rescue operations. If you want to do SAR full time, join the Coast Guard.

SAR swimmers suck in the navy. we lost 2 people at sea in the arabian gulf and could not be found. god bless their souls.
