My friend bought an expensive tent for camping that she's not happy with because the cover has a really gimped up design. After she used it once, the store owner wouldn't let her return it. Does that mean he's a jerk, or is there some reason why tents aren't returnable?

It depends on the store's return policy - most of the time if an item is defective they would take it back - even if it is used. If this is a chain, get the 800 # and call.

Otherwise - if it is just one store and the owner says no good then you can try to call the manufacturer to see what they say about it and maybe they will tell the store to give her a refund.

You guys should always always always check out the return policy before buying - and the store must say it somewhere (on the receipt or on the wall, etc - like no returns after or no returns on any used items - or they do accept them) I can see why he said this - it was used and he may think she only wanted it for one camping trip and is bringing it back but still if it is defective and there is no written policy anywhere then she should be able to return it.

From now on buy things like this at a chain store like Target or Modells Sporting Goods or online at some reputable companies -- all of these places will take returns if there is a problem - even when they are used. The prob with a mom and pop shop - one store is just this - they need all the $ they can get and aren't going to allow returns too often like chain stores will. Have her call them over the phone and just ask the return policy if an item is defective - see what they say. Get the name of the person . You should always do this BEFORE you buy - get it in writing. And at a last resort, call the manufacturer - if she has the receipt, they may refund her money most likely if she ships it to them - tell her to ask them to send her a prepaid shipping label since she shouldn't have the inconvenience. Also, check out the maker's site - do they guarantee their products cause if they do - they have to refund your $. Also - tell her to have a guy go in to say it is defective and unacceptable and that he wants his money back and if there is no return policy stating otherwise, tell the owner you will take him to court since there is no policy against returning tents - escpecially defective ones.

Good luck

If she used a charge card she can dispute the charges and have them reversed. The store owner won't be too happy but that's the protection you get with a credit card.

was this a national store or a small private businessman? if it was a national store then they should accept the return. if it was a smaller local store owner than it's his choice since he will lose the sale if he accepts the return

well all is writing in the fine prints unfortunately on the receipt, each store has different policies therefore he might not wanted to take it back due for that terms of the store

It was used. That's it. That is gross. It was probably sitting in dirt on the ground. Thinks like that are only returnable if still in the box unopened.
