Police Officers work for a set district like a town or community. A county Sheriff works the county he is assigned to. Cop is just a general term used for all Law Enforcement Personnel

Police officers are local "city" cops...paid by the locality they patrol...Sheriffs are paid by the county and have jurisdiction through out the county....DPS(Department of Public Safety) or also known as State Troopers are paid by the state and patrol interstates and state maintained roadways and have jurisdiction through out the state.

Sherrif is a county officer.... Police and cops are one in the same down here, they are all police, whether they are constables or sherrif deputies.
