JFK, you can take the shuttle bus to get into the city ... I think it costs like $3 per person ... which is cheaper than the car toll if you are traveling alone.

Why does everyone always get this wrong? I've answered these types of questions a lot. JFK is ALWAYS a no-no when flying into NY. It's a huge hassle (and the most expensive taxi ride) to get transport into the city. It could take up to an hour or more depending on traffic!
LaGuardia and Newark are both fine, but my vote is definitely for Newark. You can catch the NJ transit into the city for very cheap (it takes you right to Penn Station.... very centrally located, and from there you can get a number of any other subway trains). Or you can take a cab and it's a LOT cheaper than JFK and faster!
No matter what anyone says on here, DO NOT fly into JFK, I promise you it is a mistake. Newark handles international flights too if you are international.

The nearest airport is LaGuardia (LGA). If you're flying directly into Manhattan from a foreign country, however, your only 2 options are Newark (EWR) and Kennedy (JFK).
The cheapest mode of transportation from LGA into the city is by a large bus, normally about $12-13 one-way. Here's the website: http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/lgtsmain.HTM
Cabs from LGA into the city run about $25 if you're staying uptown. The subway does not run from LGA to Manhattan. You have to take a public bus and transfer to a subway line, which is not recommended.
JFK and Newark Airports:
Again, bus transportation is solid: http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/egtsmain.HTM
From Newark (EWR) you can also take the "Airtrain" (free) and connect to the NJ Transit train ($12) from Newark airport to Penn Station. That's a fine way to go as well
From Kennedy (JFK), take either a bus (recommended)(http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm) or, alternatively, take the "Airtrain" from JFK to the Subway or Long Island Rail Road. It's cheap, but it takes some time. That option takes the longest.
Taxi cabs from JFK are $45 flat-fee, plus toll and tips. Cabs from Newark are even more than that.
I hope this helps!

personally I like JFK - you can get domestic flights into JFK lots of them. Fastest and cheapest way to Manhattan: take the Air Train to Jamaica Station $ 5. 00 and around 10 minutes
Take the Long Island Rail Road into Penn Station - another $ 5.00 and another 10 -20 minutes
Newark isn't bad either you can get trains into Manhattan
Two things that you really need to know about Manhattan
It is a large city made up of lots of smaller cities-usually refered to as neighborhoods.
The neighborhoods are differentiated by ethnicity and economics
and when the sun goes down people go home and live in them.
Which brings me to the second thing you need to know . New York is a walking city. take the time to explore some of those neighborhoods
New Yorkers walk everywhere and they walk fast
Reason being that with Manhattan traffic being what it is it's often faster to walk then take a bus or a cab
Fastest way around is subways.
Point of reference: Above 14th st. Manhattan is on a grid- 20 blocks to a mile going up and downtown 5 blocks to a mile going crosstown. 5th ave divides E&W adresses , there are no N&S numbers
have fun

These answers remind me why I never go to NYC. I'm planning a trip to Manhattan to see my brother's art show, but the last time I went, I spent almost $200 on a taxi to and from JFK, on rides that were over an hour both times driven by a man who had no regard for my life. Traffic was horrendous, the weather was rotten, the city was loud, the people were rude, and the air was stench. And I kept thinking...why would a sane person do this? Just to get to NYC? Really?

Newark Airport in New Jersey. Then take a cab from the airport through the Lincoln Tunnel into Manhatten. It'll cost you about $60-75.
They also have a bus but it'll take over an hour to go about 10 miles.

Nearest: JFK or LaGuardia
Cheapest: Newark [in New Jersey but often has great deals]
Try Qixo.com, I've found great deals through that site. Also, use NYC as your airport code (it will search all New York city airports)

laguardia is the closet because it leaves u in new york, in queens and u can take a cab into manhattan for $20-$40 dollars, depending, or u can get a metrocard and take the subway into manhattan for $2.00.
newark and jfk are much farther away, in new jersey but you can take the train or the bus to manhattan, $3 or $4 dollars, and the cab will cost you $40.00.
if u have a lot of luggage u should not take the train or bus, no one will help you carry stuff and it's crowded on the train and buses. take a cab if u have a lot of stuff and make sure the i.d card on the taxi matches the face of the guy in the taxi! lol
