How about a story where everyone draws a picture of something they did over the summer and then shares it with the class. Or how about have the kids hold hands and form a circle, go around the circle and say their name and something fun they did over the summer. That way any students who don't know the others will get a chance to hear their name (s) and to say who they are also.

We in my classroom do an all about me book and show and tell. I send a letter home the first week of school and ask them to send in certain items each day the next week, like pictures of themselves and family, favorite toy, favorite book etc. Then the child gets to tell about his things he/she brought. After that we draw pictures about ourself and family. This is a parent involvment as well as a class activity.
