As a rule of thumb, a dog is 1 week coming in, 1 week in heat (bleeding) and 1 week going out. She should be kept away from males for the whole 3 weeks.

Your dog is in heat and this will last approximately 18-23 days, about three weeks. Dogs usually go into heat every six months, so be prepared. Like many of the other people responded, KEEP YOUR DOG AWAY FROM OTHER MALE DOGS! Go outside with her and don't leave her outside alone unattended at all. You would be surprised at how some horney male dogs find their way into your yard. Good Luck :)

Please get your dog spayed. She won't ever get her period again and you won't have to worry about protecting her from all the random male dogs that will start appearing out of the woodwork to try and mate with her. They can smell a girl dog in heat from miles away and will come calling, and they really don't like taking no for an answer. Don't leave her outside alone for a second. Not even a nano-second. And if you take her walking, prepare to defend her.

It is called being in heat, or in season. Heats last 21 to 25 days. The bleeding will stop shortly and then its the time you have to be really careful that she doesn't get around any male dogs. Keep her confined for at least another 2 weeks.

my dog is in heat also and it lasts about 3-4 weeks for my dog, and she is now pregnant by some random stray dog that wondered into our yard, so watch out for the horny male dogs.

It lasts up to 2-3 weeks, my pug is in her 2nd heat and it's awful because my males go absolutely insane near her and rip of her underwear, and never leave her alone.
