Because many people like to generalize. And some people are not capable of seeing the difference between radical fanatics and the peaceful followers of a particular faith.
Do the math. One billion Muslims worldwide. Let's say 500,000 are terrorists. That's as many people as the US currently has imprisoned nationally. Our four times as many as US troops deployed to Iraq. I think the number is way higher than reality, but let's go with it.
500,000 out of one billion is 0.05% (1/20th of one percent). That means the other 99.95% are just trying to live their lives, go to school and to work, pray, raise their families, etc.
But, too many people can't see that. They look at a few fanatics, and assume everyone of the same religion or skin color or country must be the same. It's called bigotry and prejudice.
And it's a sad mental defect shared by a large percentage of the world's population to one degree or another.

It's a knee jerk reaction. Most people know that not all muslims are terrorists. However, most terrorists are muslim, so it's easy for someone to automatically make that assumption. Another reason is because the non-terrorist muslims don't speak out against the terrorists, giving the impression that they support them.
For example, plenty of muslim support was there when the illegal immigrants staged their marches/protests in the US earlier this year. This was all documented heavily by the media. However, there have been no reported marches or protests by muslims against the terrorists, who attack in the name of their religion. A lot of people find that odd, to say the least.
If the muslim leadership came out and renounced the terrorists and made public statements separating themselves from the terrorists, the perception would pretty much go away. But that just isn't happening, therefore people just assume that they must agree with the terrorists.

Correct me if I am wrong, but weren't all those dudes who hijacked the planes on 9/11 Muslims? Weren't the terrorists just rounded up in GB Muslim? And did I miss the great outpouring of condemnation from the non radical non terrorist Muslim segment of the population? I surely didn't see any news stories about Muslim peace marches with Muslim clerics speaking out against terrorists and suicide bombers. Until that day-I will stereotype. Like it or not-if you look like a duck, walk like a duck and talk like a duck-people are going to likely think you are a duck.

They aren't. They only are if you live in a very insular world. If you talk to a wide variety of people and get your news from a varied amount of sources you would see that all Muslims are not considered terrorists. I have traveled to the middle east and when one is there it is quite easy to fall into a belief that due to the headlines on more popular and narrow viewed media that the U.S. is filled with Christian bigots that care nothing about the world except consuming hamburgers and producing bad television shows and of course bombing brown people. A small scratch under the surface shows that this isn't true. As long as we as humans continue to separate ourselves up with illusionary lines such as nationality, race, religion we will be condemned to perpetuate the vitriolic cycle of warfare and violence.

Very few people are saying "all Muslims" are terrorist. Very few people even beleive all Islamicist followers are terrorist....most people understand that the terrorism is coming from an extreme element of the Muslim and Islamic worlds....still it would be better if the majority of Muslims and Islamist would denounce the extremist among them.
For example I'm a Christian, Conservative, and Republican. When these idiots blow up abortion clinics or kill or try to kill people that provide abortions I denounce them and hope our system will punish them to the fullest extent of the law. Muslims and Islamist need to do that...

Maybe they should stop supporting the terrorist and celebrating when they kill Innocent people ( 9/11 ) If they live in America then support the USA or leave . The immigrants of the past did , when they came here . The immigrants of today stay loyal to the country they left and just want to live here and not to be Americans . They only want the freedom , to support their own country's , not ours .

Ignorance that is why. Also not all westerners consider Muslims to be terrorist. I know them to be a peaceful and loving people, judging by the ones I have had the pleasure to meet.

Some people I think characterize Muslims as terrorists because of how they are portraid in the news and how frequently. We are always hearing about this Muslim shoe bomber, and this Muslim suicide bomber, and this Muslim planning to bomb so and so. I think it leads to a lot of mischaracterization of Muslims by a lot of Americans.

not all muslims are considered terrorists. The KKK are considered terrorist and they don't have any muslims, only christians. The oklahoma city bomber was a terrorist and he wasn't muslim either. Only muslim terrorists are making the 6 o'clock news these days. I call it filtering.
