The term soft drink originally applied to carbonated drinks and non-carbonated drinks made from concentrates, although it now commonly refers to any cold drink that does not contain alcohol. Beverages like soda, lemonade, and fruit punch are among the most common types of soft drinks, while hot chocolate, tea, and coffee do not fall into this classification.

Fizzy drinks (carbonated beverages) are produced by injecting carbon dioxide into the drink at a pressure of several atmospheres. Carbon dioxide dissolves readily at normal atmospheric pressure, particularly in cold beverages, but far more so at high pressure and large volumes of gas can be dissolved. When the pressure is released the carbon dioxide comes out of solution forming numerous bubbles and begins releasing the carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. After many minutes most of the carbon dioxide has been released and the drink is said to be "flat".

Because when it is thrown at you, it doesn't hurt as bad as a hard drink like Scotch. (note: the container to soft drinks are usually plastic while hard drinks are usually glass) LOL!!!
OR
Because hard drinks like Whiskey tend to hurt more when you get so drunk that you fall flat on your face. LOL!

Because in bars, the alternative is called "Hard liquor".
Sure there are things inbetween (beer), but they are considered
the extremes in the drink preparation business.

because, rum and other alcoholic beverages are called "hard." drinks. When someone offers you wiskey, etc, they offer you a "stiff," drink. So pop is a soft drink, no alcohol in it.
