It's brilliant and you must go. It's a big site and they've got a fine collection of steam locos from the 19th century up to the mid-1960s, also a workshop with a viewing gallery - they are currently working on the Flying Scotsman, I believe. The record-breaking Mallard is on display. There are also diesel and electric locos, and mock-up signal box which has a live link to the real York Station signal box, so you can see what's going. Latest attraction is the Wheel which is a slightly smaller version of the "London Eye". Museum entry is free.

it is easily well worth a bypass to. it relatively is the best "railway" museum in Europe and in all probability in the international. heavily, it is astounding. I would desire to comprehend, before one had to pay, I used to have an annual club to it. It has 2 massive halls with trains of each and every age and from particularly some international locations and that they presently unfolded the workshops so which you will see them engaged on the engines. they have a internet site, do no longer comprehend what it is like yet have a seem. The eating place is stable yet you are able to take a picnic. At weekends they run the two a steam practice or different locomotive (purely a short music) and those are super relaxing. in case you have little ones (or in my case notwithstanding in case you do no longer) they have a minature steam music too. there is a lot to be sure and so as that they have loads of practice and station memorobilia. you isn't disillusioned - get that practice booked from London to York and while you're sensible and e book it online you will desire to be waiting to get an exceedingly much less costly deal for around £22 return. seem on trainline. additionally, do no longer forget approximately York has lots of different spectacular issues to do too. Yorvik Museum, Minster, river journeys, 2 theatres etc. I sound like I would desire to artwork for the vacationer board!

Please feel free to e.mail if you have any specific questions, the museum is a fair reflection on how railways came to being with exhibits to show how the evolution of railways occured, though without some interest in the subject and with the number of exhibits you may find it hard to distinguish the relevance of much of it.
for those who have an interest it is a fantastic place to visit, for those without it is still eye opening for a while, there on occasion are working examples but generally all you see is for exhibit purposes only.
If how this country has achieved its position in the world is of interest to you, the backbone that helped its growth and aided with victory in the second world war is on display here and is well worth a look.

I went to NRM in February. Great exhibit if you enjoy rail or if you have kids. However, if neither is true for you, I would recommend you spend your money at Clifford's Tower (breath taking views of York) and York Minster. You can walk around most of York Minster early in the morning for free (usually on Sunday mornings before or during Mass).

GREAT place to spend a rainy afternoon. Doesn't seem to hold the attention of the ladies though, it must be said.
If you love railways this place is a shrine. Simple as that, not to be missed. A national treasure.
