Windows XP is the current version of Microsoft's desktop operating system. Its is available in three versions:

Windows XP Home Edition--This version is designed to replace Windows 95/98 and Windows Me operating systems.
It is primarrily intended for consumer and entertainment market and provids many enhancements, such as more powerful and strealined Internet access than any of its predecessors.

Windows XP Profesional--This version is designed and positioned to compete with Windows NT workstation and Windows 2000 professional operating systems. It contains features that make it more suitable as a client in enterprise networks. These features includ simpler remote access and dommain membership, enhanced security and reliability features, multiple-processor support and multiple-language availability.

Windows XP 64 bit Edition--This high-end version of the operating system is designed to run on Intel Itanium processors. These processors are employed in high data-volum environments. This Windows XP version supports up to 16GB of physical memory and 16TB of virtual memory. Unlike its NT predecessors, Windows XP does not feature matching workstation and server operating system versions.

Hope this helps to explain.

personally if its just for yourself mate, just go for the xp home, purely because its the cheaper of the two
i use home in the living room and pro in the bedroom, but i belive that the pro has extra features such as networking capabilities, remote desktop facilities, and basically its aimed at business,s were as home is for the average "home" user
pro also has unnatended setps which means you can get versions of pro to install on mass p.c,s,like a office were there are 30 to 40 pc.s
the unattended version of pro can only be bought directly from certain manufacturers as you dont need to do anything during setup, hence the word "unattended"
good luck

Lots of good answers already. But one more thing: some games (typically older ones) won't run in XP Pro. For example, Star Wars Rebellion (http://www.lucasarts.com/products/rebellion/) won't.

home edition is for home use recommended and xp profissional is for office use recommended...

but one thing i like in xp pro from xp home, its the regisration...
xp pro do not require registration or cannot be expired and xp home edition has a limited time of use, not unless you registered it into the microsoft corporation through internet.

pick xp pro...

Pro contains a lot more utilities that are useful if you're a power user or a network supervisor. If you just want to run applications, there's not much difference.
