I have a Poloroid portable DVD player with its own screen. It fits in this bag (man purse) along with quite a bit of stuff, like DVD's. (I lug it to work, watch dvds on the bus, this bag weighs about 30 lbs) it runs on its own battery. Am I going to have problems this Saturday having this bag, DVD player inside, as my only carry-on?

Not at all, In security they will ask you to take the content out of the bag because of the amount of metal in it. It is cameras that you need to worry about, because certain speeds of the film can be damaged in the x-ray machines. Your DVD player is no problem.
All of your questions can also be answered at the TSA website

All of the rules are the same except the new liquids/gels ban. No need to worry about the things that are ok to go, then and now.

Your fine with what you said you want to take as long as it's a flight in the US, that gate agent does only kinda know things, taking out laptops, DVD players etc. has nothing to do with the metal in it, on the x-ray it's hard to see if there's anything in it besides what should be if it's in a bag with a lot of other stuff.

If you are flying domestic US, you can bring electronic devices. The TSA does not prohibit them. See FAQ here:

If you are flying to or from Britain, different restrictions may apply.

Yes. They're not allowing any electronics right now. Don't take any snakes, either.
