Well, if its a really old HandyCam, then chances are your camera didn't COME with a nice CD that helps you in converting your movies to the computer.
Chances are you will need a video capture device for your computer so your camera can connect to it. A popular one out there is called Dazzle. You'll also need video capturing software. Windows movie maker might do the trick, but chances are you might want a better program.

i am not sure what model of camcorder you are using but the model i have which is sony dcr trv 480, has a firewire port and i connect to my computer through a firewire or IEEE port and thus convert my tapes to digital format. i am not sure what tape you use, but i believe you cannot transfer movies from a usb cable as usb cable has data transfer of about 10 mbps while firewire cable can have more than 400 mbps. check if you have a firewire port both on your cam and your computer. there should be written an I 1394 or just I. you might need to get a firewrire cable too. but this all pays. I do it that way. i couldnot do it through usb cable.
check your maual if it has got a firewire port and your computer too. there are 4-pinned and 6-pinned ports so make sure what is your port before getting a cable.

firstly connect ur cam to the computer with a usb port. Then put the CD that came with the cam. it will autorun and direct u to download a software, ie the driver of the cam. then cut them with the help of windows movie maker. Go to the files option and option video capture. it will guide u through the rest.
