Microsoft design the XP operating system, why dont they design the operating system with an anti virus, firewall & popup blocker already on the disc - or do they?

They are working on a complete package as we speak, I have been beta testing it along with Lot's of other technicians, it's called Windows Live OneCare, and it should be available now online at their website, but remember one thing, Not all things done by Microsoft are good, and not all things done by others are any better, you have to test drive and experiment with antivirus programs, firewall, spyware programs, etc. Until you find the one that fullfills your needs.. Good Luck

Newer XP CDs (those with Service Pack 2 integrated) come with the Windows Firewall and an Internet Explorer 6 version with a pop-up blocker already integrated. As to antivirus programs - if Microsoft were to bundle one, there would be a major outcry by the likes of Symantec etc over MS abusing their monopoly.

(Side note: MS-DOS 6.x shipped with an integrated antivirus program back in 1993/1994. It wasn't updated very often though, thus essentially useless.)

A firewall and popup blocker come with new XP versions.

If they started giving away proper free antivirus and firewalls then they'd end up in court again acused of monopolisation. Companys such as AVG, Symantec and Mcaffee would have a problem selling their software if Microsoft simply gave it away free.

Windows XP came with a firewall and it was made a lot better with Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 7 (IE6 and IE7) both have popup blockers.

There is no anti-virus package but there is one coming soon from Microsoft that you have to pay for as they provide updates so the anti virus software will detect all the new viruses and for them to do that and employ people to sort it out they quite rightly ask to be paid for it.

They do, but the operating system is so full of holes would YOU use their firewall?
What they need to do is to go back to basics and start again, instead of keeping on slapping more plasters over an operating system that should have been retired 10 years ago.
Steve Jobs did it, and the result (Mac OS X) is glorious!

Would you ask a chicken to guard the chicken coup?

I recommend diverse and alternate solutions, since the hackers will go after a Microsoft product first.

those are all additional features that they can make money off of. would be nice if they did but then they'd lose profit on the other stuff. they do have beta programs like defender that can act as virus deterrants but nothing really soundproof by any measure.

Because they want your money. If they actually made a foolproof system then you wouldn't need upgrades and they wouldn't be able to charge exorbitant sums for 'New and improved' systems and then Bill Gates wouldn't be able to prance around as the World's Savior.

You might get this on the new Windows Vista (whenever that's going to be!) They keep putting the marketing date back, but when it comes it's supposed to have lots of bells and whistles.
