Let me ask that question a different way:
Why do Christians portray themselves in ways that are not scriptural?
Are we just supposed to love God our neighbors, try and live well, and damn well talk like I want?
And why to non-Christians actually believe Christianity is at all like that? Cuz they ain't had proper examples?Come to happy hour with me tonight, and we'll talk....

Please give me something better than out of context bible verses...we're not in Sunday school any more....
the "your body is a temple" argument is weak because is that "you" a singular or plural you? check your sources, cuz its plural.
cussing is slander and blasphemous? thats pushing the limits of absurdity, and you damn well better READ your bible better and stop "proof-testing" for your own motives.
I never said anything about getting drunk, so stop giving me these "getting drunk" verses...and besides, the Bible doesn't say its wrong, just that its not wise..;)
gimme some meat here....

The bible does NOT say that you shouldn't smoke or drink. It does say you should't get drunk. (Romans 13:3, 1 Cor 5:11,
Eph 5:15)
The trouble comes from understanding the nature of God's will. We, as Christians are here as tourists. We don't live for the pleasures of the world, although we do enjoy them. The focus of our lives needs to be on Jesus.
We are specifically tasked with the assignment of helping each other toward righteousness. As there are some who cannot control their drinking, you having a beer or two can cause a problem for him. And that's against everything Christianity stands for.
As for cussing,... Ephesians 5 covers it pretty well.
Basically, if you're gonna talk the talk, you've gotta walk the walk.

There is no word that you can not smoking or drinking. For Smoke there is verses that you should take care of your Body and from science we know smoking is bad for you.
As for Drinking the bible does say "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit." Ephesians 5:18 The Key is not Drinking but Getting Drunk. Also on both Smoking and Drinking we need to be careful because it may cause one of other brother to fall and that is also in the Bible.
As for Cussing ther are verses, First is one of the Ten Commandment "do not uses the name of the LORD in Vain". also the bible says in Ephesians 4:29 "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

Ro 12:1
¶ I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Smoking/Drinking is an abuse of our "temples" which are where the Spirit of God lives while we are on this earth if we are Christians...therefore, it is an abomination to abuse them. as far as the cussing....
Ephesians 4:29 states,
"Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers."
Cuss words are—and I'm sure you'll agree—corrupt. No doubt about that. So, plain and simple, this verse tells us not to use those words. They don't edify, and edification is necessary. They are corrupt, so we should disassociate ourselves from them.
And yet more evidence—1 Peter 2:1:
"Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking. . . ."
Cussing is evil. It is offensive to many in society, and society itself considers cuss words to be cuss words, so they are most definitely evil. Thus, according to this passage, we are to lay them aside. The Christian has no use for cussing. He is to be kept pure and clean before God.
Cussing can also inhibit us from spreading the Gospel. If someone who is lost sees you cussing, they are not going to think of you as a Christian. However, if they see you helping others, being nice, and reading your Bible, then if they have a question about God or salvation, they're liable to come to you. We tell people a lot through our actions, and we might with ungodly behavior repel someone looking for God.
All things considered, cussing is a sin, and sin damns us (Romans 6:23). We cannot enter Heaven with sin. If we cuss, we must repent, and God will forgive us (1 John 1:9). It's a simple as that. So don't cuss.

hey just keep in mind that most of the bible was written tens to hundreds of years after the events were "witnessed" and that the book has been edited for thousands of years and many things have popped up while others have just faded away...take for example the story of Jesus coming across a crowd about to stone a woman and he says "let ye without sin cast the first stone" this little story did NOT appear in the bible until the 16th century so take the book with a grain of salt and just try to follow the biggys you know like not killing & not stealing....and basically be a good person and hope that GOD is as understanding and just as the bible says he is

The biggest problem with most peoples opinions is stereotypng, not all Christians dropped out in grade 3, not all Christians smoke, drink, cuss...some do, the vast majority don't. The world is filled with hard working, honest and good intentioned christians, but a few little rascals (ie televangelists) do some pretty wild and offensive things in the name of God and malign everyones opinion of Christians as a whole.

Drinking -- some forms of Christianity say it's wrong, but the one I follow (Roman Catholicism) does not. Drinking is okay, although drunkenness is not.
Smoking -- I don't think the Bible says anything specific about smoking, one way or the other. But it does talk about our bodies being the temple of the spirit. It also talks about loving our neighbors -- which we're failing at, if we're exposing them to our secondhand smoke.
Cussing -- Don't know if that's mentioned in the Bible either, but we may not necessarily be obeying God's command to love our neighbors if we're exposing them to language that is hostile, profane, or angry.

the bible never says you cant drink.
but it does say: Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; basically, dont get drunk
now cussing, it says is a no'no: Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (Ephesians 4:29)
and for smoking..it doesnt say anything directly but remember your body is a temple

While God's Word does not specifically mention tobacco use and drug abuse, its principles can protect us from these practices. For instance, 2 Corinthians 7:1 advises: "Let us cleanse ourselves of every defilement of flesh and spirit." There is no question that tobacco and drugs pollute, or defile, the flesh with many harmful chemicals. What is more, God wants our bodies to be "holy," which means pure and clean. (Romans 12:1) By applying these principles it will reduce a significant risk to one's life. So while it doesn't say it, it does provide a very clear principle on the matter.

I was taught that keeping your body clean and pure is just as important as keeping you thoughts clean. If we are to love one another usually you think positive thought about that person. Well, then we need to have a positive body inside and out. Smoking and drinking causes problems for most if not all people to partake of such activities and those who are around them. Causing another person lung cancer isn't loving them. Drunk driving isn't considerate of others and so on. Nobody complains if you eat a carrot out in public but they do when you smoke. I can't love my neighbor if they are causing me problems. Understand?
