No one is going to give it to you for free. Its your dog, take care of it. Heartworm medication isn't even all that expensive...

Go become a vet if you want stuff for free! Why not ask for free food while you are at it? Seriously. By the way- heartworm prevention is a prescription- it requires a vet to give the okay to dispense it so if you have never taken your pet to one- good luck. And wal mart does not sell it. Good idea getting it from out of the country- you have no clue what it is or where it has been- way to kill your dog! And you can use ivermectin- way to kill your dog if you overdose by even .10cc! You can get tri-heart or interceptor for around $20 for a 6 month supply from your vet- if you can't afford this do your dog a favor and find it a better home.

I don't know of FREE heartworm prevention, but you can order generic prevention from Australia via places like Petshed.com. Today they have generic HW prevention for $12.95-19.95US per 6 months supply, depending on the weight of the dog. Their Heartguard branded prevention is about $10 more for the 6 months box. Of course it also cost a little more for shipping. I use Petshed because I can order flea prevention does for St Bernard size dogs and split it for my three medium size dogs. Saves me about $20 per month as opposed to having to pay $10/month for single doses from the vet.

You can also buy a bottle of Ivermectin liquid that will last forever. Here our shelter buys it from someone at cost, and I think I remember it costing about $30. That would last the average dog for months and months, but would require you to do some calculations to dispense the right dosage. It's also not very pleasant tasting. Better than getting heartworms, though!

Another option is to buy single doses from the vet every month. It IS penny wise but pound foolish, however since I live paycheck to paycheck, many is the time I can spend $10 when I don't have $30 available.

Please do whatever it takes to get heartworm prevention for your dog. If nothing else, pick up aluminum cans and turn them in for the money to buy the meds. Heartworms will kill your dog and they spread so easily...
