EGD = esophageogastroduodenoscopy. Its a simple procedure - where the doc will run a tube with a small camera at the tip down your throat and into your stomach to see if there's anything wrong - be it gastritis, varices (dilated veins), polyps (small projections), changes in the lining, bleeding, ulcers, cancer, etc in the esophagus, stomach or duodenum. He will see the image on a tv screen - you can as well. If he finds, say, an ulcer for example, he may also want to take a samll piece of it (biopsy) to send for analysis. Just relax during the procedure, and follow the instructions given. It should be all over in under a half hour. Before the procedure the nurse will probably coat you mouth with some liquid - its just a local anesthetic.
If you have a nice doc, you can ask him to explain as he is doing the procedure the different parts he sees, and you can look at it with him on the little tv screen.
Dont be worried - its very safe and routinely done.

An EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is a proecedure that is done to visualize your upper gastrointestinal tract. The nurse will give you sedation through an IV. The doctor will use a scope with a small camera in it (kinda like video) to check out your GI tract from the esophagus to the duodenum. You basically have this long tube/scope advanced from your mouth down to the duodenum. Most times people receive Versed IV for this... and this makes you pretty much forget the procedure. This is a good test for the doctor to be able to check for ulcers or any other abnormalities that might be present. (If you have ever heard of a colonoscopy... this is pretty similar... except that the doctor starts at the top and goes down instead of starting at the bottom and going up). Good luck, I hope the results are normal.

Yeah I had one, they run a light down your thoat to look in your stomach, they take biopsies if need. They sedate you so you alseep enough that i won't hurt but awake enough so you can listen to the doctor. I'm not going to lie your throat does hurt after. GOOD LUCK.
