"I'm just trying to get a sense of how this works."
I rarely answer these days. I look for statements like this to make an exception.
You must first understand that heaven is a reality in which we have no concept or understanding. We cannot even grasp the idea of looking into the face of a holy God would kill us instantly.
When Paul got a glimpse of heaven, he could not even truthfully say it was him that witnessed it, it was a whole other person. He stated that it would be unlawful to even try to describe what he saw there.
In heaven, there is no time, there is no physical, it is a reality beyond reality. Light will not be limited to a seven color spectrum, nor music limited to 7 major notes. Sound will not be limited in volume or frequency, sight will not be limited to the visible spectrum. Dimensions will exceed our puny 4, and all perspective will be changed in a moment.
In eternity, every tear will be wiped from our eyes. Translation? We will have a perspective based in an eternal reality. The purpose of our creation. The meaning derived from our life. Our parents were just biological tools--our true Father was the One we now have eternal fellowship. Our true family were those that are already there. The key is to think beyond the physical and try to comprehend that there is far more to heaven than what can be described within the bounds of the physical world. And of all things, it will be a reality in that access was gained by Christ's finished work on the cross. Free to all who desired it.

To go into God's heaven you need to trust and believe in the fact that the Lord Jesus Christ die on the cross for your sins, If you have believed this then when you die or the rapture take place you will go into God's heaven. After the judgment seat of Christ you will get a glorified body a Spiritual body one that can live in the heavens. You are right if you had a memory of the people you knew on earth you could not be happy in heaven. You will not have a memory, the only way you will be known is by what you have done with the ministry God gave you. Philippians 3: 21 Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. 1 Corinthians 13: 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. 1 Corinthians 15: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

There is one Heaven because there is one God. The main points about what's good in heaven are:
-No Pain
-No Weariness
-No Fear
-An absolute sense of belonging
Despite beliefs to the contrary, I very much doubt that Heaven will contain any of the good things we enjoy on earth. For example, many people imagine a huge banquet with every kind of good food. I don't think we'll have a need or a desire to eat. I think there'll be better things to do.

You don't mention what religion, if any, you are but I'll figure you're some derivative of Christianity.
Jesus and the New Testament writers knew that their listeners were not spiritually advanced enough to be able to understand "the truth". Jesus makes reference to speaking to them in parables so that they will not understand, and Paul makes clear that he is giving the recipients of his letters the "milk" because they are not ready for "the meat" - i.e. they are spiritual babies.
The bottom line is that Jesus had to "dumb down" the truth for his particular audience. And so the Christian message includes these concepts of Heaven and hell being "places" - one where people are happy and another where they are tormented.
I would suggest that Christian doctrine today is still just the "milk", but unfortunately Christians have lost sight of the fact that the "meat" even exists. They've lost track of the fact that there is a hidden or esoteric meaning that Jesus conveyed to his closest followers.
In a nutshell, I would suggest that Heaven and hell are not "places" per se, but rather spiritual conditions that we find ourselves in after death. Each of us will find ourselves in a "place" or spiritual condition that matches where we're at spiritually.
If you're interested in reading what is a very different take on Jesus' message, but one that I think is much closer to the truth of what Jesus was trying to teach us, consider reading "Putting on the Mind of Christ" by Jim Marion. Part of it is his retelling of his own spiritual journey, and part is what I consider to be an explanation of Jesus' message that I believe makes a lot more sense than what we are used to hearing.
Note that it's a tough read and takes some thinking, over a period of time to really consider what he's saying. Note also that I don't consider this book to be the be-all, end-all of understanding but rather it's a good jolt to the system that can maybe point you in the direction of the "narrow path" that Jesus spoke of.
Good luck - and also, I spent a lot of time in my younger days worrying about my loved one's going to "hell" and ultimately I have come to believe that it was wasted and needless worrying. Jesus meant to convey a message of "good news". Unfortunately organized religion, like the media, finds that scaring people with bad news (you're in danger of going to hell!) is more effective in keeping the pews filled and so Jesus' message has been twisted and warped into something it was never meant to be.

The is only one heaven, and the only people that get there are those who Christ testifies to the Father that are true Christians. If you do not believe in heaven, then what do you believe happens to your soul at death? or do you believe that when you die that you are just dead in a box? That would make life pointless. God did not put us here to be waste matter. He did not create the earth as his personal playground and humans as his toys to break at will. We were created for a definite purpose and that purpose extends beyond this life. Earthly existence is a beginning, not an end in itself. We were meant for spiritual growth so that we can serve God according to his plan. Jesus loves you.

The Quran, Literally and Allegorically describes Heaven like this...
Sura 2 Ayat 24
Give Good news to those who believe and do right actions that they will have Gardens with rivers flowing under them. When they are given fruit (things) there as provision they will say, "This is way we were given before,"
But they were only given a simulation of it. They will have there spouses of perfect purity and will remain there timelessly, for ever.

It's in the mind. As many Universes as there are people to think them up. That's heaven. Control over that universe and the eternal teaching of god.

No idea mate, but heaven to me is here on earth and the life we live.
Heaven to me is being with the family, together with everyone, sharing their happiness and concerns.
Heaven to me is being able to get up every morning and seeing all whom I love safe and sound.
Heaven to me, is to be able to to be happy with every little joy one gets.
Heaven to me is, to be able to provide for family and for the guests.
Heaven to me is to able to celebrate in every little success that i get.
Heaven to me is believing in myself that I can steer my family out of trouble when there is a crisis.
That is heaven for me. I am not waiting for a Heaven in a life, that I don't even know, exists.

I don't get the heaven theory at all. What could possibly be frightening about ceasing to exist. You weren't afraid before you were born were you? Nope. You did not exist. No worries. Dead is the same. You will no longer exist. No worries.
