With the global war on terror and our commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq, do we need a military draft? Im an MP in the Army and i like to serve with fellow soldiers that like to be there but sometimes, there is not enough.

Yes we should. Who cares if you don't support this war in particular, a lot of those fighting don't. Last I checked this war nor any war for that matter was about WHAT YOU WANTED. It is about giving something of yourself to pay back what you have been given in life as simple as that. As someone else said if we can not keep and build an effective fighting force because our people are too self centered, materialistic and selfish then maybe we as a nation do not need to exist. As far as it costing too much to draft. Young one we ALREADY pay for it, we just don't get any WORK out of it. What I would like to see?

No government loans or grants or scholarships for college unless you have served two years.

No unemployment pay unless you are physically/mentally unable to work for the military or some other government agency peace corps, border patrol, civil air patrol or Civilian Conservation Corps like in the 50's rebuilding New Orleans, repaving highways, working on repairing schools etc.

The same holds true for welfare

The same could be said for Social Security later in life.

You see we already "pay" out the nose for such as a bunch of lazy assed Americans believe they have somehow become "entitled" to such benefits by virtue of them being born here. Yet nobody is willing to do anything to "earn" those entitlements. In short why should Uncle Sam pay for you to get anything when you have done absolutely nothing for the country you are getting those benefits from.

A draft is finacially impossible for our country. Think about it, the government would have to provide uniforms, training, food, housing, and medical for the hundreds of thousands that would be drafted. Just not logical at this time. And besides that the average american now is far less able to handle the battle field and extensive training that our grandparents and parents went through.
Don't get me wrong I admire those of you that serve and protect my freedom, half the men in my family and several friends serve or have served in the military, I just don't think that the American public could handle the pressure of a draft, finacially or emotionally or in any aspect for that matter.

Again with the draft questions!! Do you people really think it could happen? Remember, it can only be reinstated by an act of Congress! No one person can reinstate the draft! Do you really think that Congress could muster up enough votes to reinstate? They can only ever agree on their own pay raises. Please, stop with the draft questions. It will never happen unless something occurs that is so heinous that it would make Congress get along long enough to send everyone but their own kids into combat. As long as there are Democrats and Republicans, it will never happen. Never. Stop talking about it.

On March 11, 2006, Charles Rangel, congressman from NY, saw his draft bill pass the Congress. It was incorporated to enact at the presidents request. The ages of enlistment are 18 - 42, both men and women. We signed pacts with both Canada and Mexico to extridite all draftdidgers back to the US to face trial.
Sadly, all it will take is another 911 type event, and then watch Bush make his announcement.

For sure because a universal draft with no exemptions for the rich and well-connected would put hundreds of thousands of people into the streets to end this immoral/illegal travesty. Why? Because then fat, complacent American young people would be personally impacted. And trust me, push come to shove dyin in the desert isn't on most people's agenda. Acting in their own best interests, people would resist and begin to seriously demand an end to this. WE HAVE ALL BEEN HERE BEFORE!

Not before the election... that would REALLY make the republicans loose and they know it. But you are an idiot if you think we are NOT going to have one. Especially if Bush manages to get a war started with Iran.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

I don't think you should force people to serve their country if they're heart isn't in it. They wouldn't give it they're best effort, they would just be thinking about themselves. I understand that the lines of young men signing up to fight are getting shorter, but I have faith that the American soldier in them will shine through. :)

No. We just need to abolish the irrelevant organization known as NATO...and end our military presence in Europe. Let those whiners care for themselves.

Only if ALL people aged 18 to 24 (?) are drafted regardless of their social status or if they are in college (if you survive the war, no harm, no foul, pick up where you left off) and NO senetor's kid is exempt. NO Bush is exempt (including those two drunk b*tches), NO AMERICAN is exempt.

otherwise HELL NO.
