A complicated question to be sure. There have been thousands of "gods" throughout human history/mythology. From Jesus, Jehovah and Allah to Zeus, Odin, and Buddha (sometimes, he wasn't so much seen as a god but more as a "prophet" who told us one of the ways the world could work, though at times he was seen as a god). I guess the best answer would be that if God exists (I believe He does but not everyone does) then He is our creator and therefore the One whose rightful place is to tell us our purpose for living.
But that causes some problems too, because He is also now responsible for telling us our purpose for dying. The Bible, the Qu'ran, the Talmud and so many other religious books are there to tell us these things (whichever one is the word of God) and the reasons why we live, die, suffer, and rejoice. The true God is the one (and the only one) who can answer these questions for us.

God is the figment of man's imagination, a desperately creative answer to a question that blows man's mind, and evidence that man has a hard time accepting own limitations. We want to know, we want to have answers, and since questions such as "Why are we here?" "What is the purpose of life?" "Where do we come from and where do we go?" are of such existential nature, and it is so frustrating to not come up with any answers, we just create an explanation. So FAITH is really about an attitude towards a take-it-or-leave-it answer.
It is easier to "believe" because then at least you feel you have all the answers, and you can turn over your problems to "GOD". Those who can't believe do not have this luxury. They live life without the consolation of the idea of a higher justice or a future happiness, or eternity...
"God", his will, and dozens of variations of it,
also serve as an excuse to start wars, to indulge in one's own ignorance and intolerance,
to make oneself feel "better" than others, to give oneself a mission in life, or whatever. And finally, "God" is also the basis of numerous profit-making enterprises. The idea of God, faith, whatever you want to call it, also spawns many good causes, of course....but I would argue that you don't need a God in order to be good, moral, ethical, and to be kind and generous to others.
"God" is an idea...that's all.

John 4: 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The Lord Jesus Christ had to come to earth as a man so He could die for our sins. He rose again the third day for our justification. Philippians 2: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Philippians 2: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Philippians 2: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

God is just another fake creation by man.
Humanity has created many Gods, for example – Gods of Olympus, Ancient Egypt, Babylon and so on. Most of us are atheists about most Gods humanity has created, except the latest craze, the current God in the Bible. Learned atheists have also rejected this version of a God, but some hard-core believers still hang on, presumably until a better image of God is created by man.
Faith in God seems to be nothing more than humans attempting to run away from reality, an excuse to avoid thinking and evaluating evidence. Faith is just an emotional escape and really just a substitute for opening your eyes to reason.
Believers talk about God creating man in his own image. It’s in the Bible so it’s fact – get a grip, get real. The facts suggest the exact opposite. Man created God in his own image. I’m sure humanity will disregard this God, as they have disregarded all previous Gods, it’s just a matter of time before humanity creates another God that better serves their emotions and image.

god is many things to many people. to me, god is the power and creator (our universe). it is also the god/goddess of love and truth. no one god is right for everyone (or atleast I believe this) whatever resonates with the individual, and what your soul believes to be true, is your truth, and thus will seek out your true god or creator.
