I drink a lot - I follow the 6 8-oz glasses of water a day. But it did not seem to make any changes in how I feel and how my skin looks. Recently I read in Oprah's magazine, that it is a myth that drinking a lot of water is beneficial for health, they advise there to use thirst as a guide to how much water you need to drink. Of course, that applies to healthy people and if you exercise you should drink more.

How much water should you drink each day? — a simple question with no easy answers. Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years, but in truth, your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are and where you live.
Though no single formula fits everyone, knowing more about your body's need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.
.
How much water do you need?
Every day you lose water through your breath, perspiration, urine and bowel movements. For your body to function properly, you must replenish its water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.
A couple of approaches attempt to approximate water needs for the average, healthy adult living in a temperate climate.
Replacement approach. The average urine output for adults is 1.5 liters a day. You lose close to an additional liter of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water or other beverages a day (a little more than 8 cups) along with your normal diet, you will typically replace the lost fluids.
Dietary recommendations. The Institute of Medicine advises that men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.
Even apart from the above approaches, it is generally the case that if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce between one and two liters of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day, your fluid intake is probably adequate.

A person is "supposed" to drink 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water a day. But if you are active, drink more because you lose more fluids when active.

I am pretty sure that 48 ounces of h2o a day is enough. If you drink coffee or tea, that goes toward the total amount. If you are working out in the hot sun, DRINK plenty more. Fruits and veggies provide water in your diet, many of them are made up of 50% water.

Per CNN's recent news / health story it is 2.2 Liters per day.
I tried - drinking that much is HARD to do. Keep in mind you will get some water from normal eating and drinking (ie fruits & vegetables) too. Soda counts, although it has so much salt and added chemicals, its not a healthy route.
Good luck!

It depends on your size and activity level, but at least two liters a day, if not more. If you drink cold water (ice water), you will automatically burn calories by drinking water. Cold water (0C) is heated by your body to 37C, so every liter of ice water you drink will burn at least 37 calories. It's a little-known fact about water.

Eight glasses a day have been recommend since I was a girl scout many, many years ago. I've never been able to do it but I try ... it helps to grate a little lemon peel into it or a tiny bit of sugar free rasberry Crystal Lite.
