Software can be defined in different ways.

Basically it is a sequence of instructions for the computer... telling the computer how/when to run. So no, it's not an illusion, but yes.. it is just information like words, thoughts, sentances. In essence, software is an idea. Ideas are not illusions - they are real like you or me.

are you getting at an analogy with the HIndu belief of "maya". Yes software does not have a physical existance apart from the code written on a paper, floppy, CD etc. But then so does love, hate, friendship joy have no existance. When people sell u the experience in a posh hotel there is nothing specific but yet it is the feel. U can say its the service. Similarly software is the functions the program performs n thats why I believe that all software should always be free

I wouldn't call it an illusion; it's abstract. It's intellectual property. I suppose paying for software is like paying for someone to clean your house. You don't get to take the clean house home. You aren't getting anything physical to keep. Those poor programmers have to make a living, otherwise software could be free.

No software is not an illusion, it is a physical entity all be it only a small one. Data is stored on you're hard drive magnetically, the electrons (yes they are very small) on you're hard drives surface area are changed correlating to the data you have stored there, so something physical although small does a job of manipulating other data. All software does/is is chunks of something moving chunks of something else around.
