First, congratulations on starting a workout regimen. If you are a beginner, you should do a full body weight training workout about 3 times a week. This will give you enough strength and muscle gains. For cardiovascular exercise, I would suggest about 4-5 times a week.

An example routine would be as follows:
So, if you were weight training Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Cardio could be on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Leave Sunday as a complete rest day for your body to recover. Be sure to do cardio after your weight training otherwise, you body will be weakened and you won't be able to lift as much weight.

Also note, that initially you may not lose that much weight. This is because you will be gaining muscle as well. If you lose 3 pounds of fat but gain 2 pounds of muscle...you will lose a net pound. But, don't be discouraged because you will be building a healthier body...look for a decrease in dress size instead of raw pounds lost.

You may need to lighten up on the weight training or the cardio if you want to focus on building strength or fat loss. If you do too much of each, it can be counter productive. Good luck!
