If I spend 1/4 my wages getting to and from work would it be better to itemize?

If you have a regular job for which you are paid wages the answer is NO! There are some circumstances that would allow you to deduct a number of things related to your getting to work and any use of your own vehicle while at work but normally that requires that the vehicle is used as part of your work responsibilities. An example might be if you were on call and required to carry company equipment in your personal vehicle to do the job when called out.

The truth is commuting is not deductible, however if you have more than one job the miles from job 1 to job 2 are deductible. Also, if you are self-employed and you use your car for business
purposes, those miles are deductible on Schedule C but not the to and from work miles.

That part of the gas used to get to and from work is not deductable, but any driving you do as a part of your job, is deductable.
