If it is sold through regular retailers, and the operating conditions are not exceeded, it is safe.
Teflon-based products CAN emit a gas that is toxic to birds if overheated- and it takes a little work to get it that hot. The gas is not known to affect humans, but it is still not smart to overheat the stuff.
There MIGHT be some long-term human health risks, but none have yet been documented.
Cheap non-stick pans tend to loose the non-stickum stuff more readily, which would get into food- but Teflon is so non-toxic that it is used in many medical devices designed to be left inside a human.

yes it is safe, as long as you don't heat it without food in it. if it starts to smoke, the smoke is toxic. as long as you put oil or something in it right away you're find. the non stick brand Teflon was found to be unsafe and was taken off the market in 2006. I learned about it in my restaurant management class in college. I don't remember what the exact reason why was, but a study showed that a lot of americans had it in their bloodstreams. I remember this because someone made a joke about it making plaque not stick in your arteries. Teflon's chemical formula is different than other types though, so you're fine. make sure you use nonscratch utensils with it. if it starts to peel, replace it.

The only safety difference that I know of is between teflon and whatever else is used to coat non-stick cookware, because if you burn a teflon pan, the fumes are toxic and can kill birds (which should tell you something about how good they are for you).

non stick cook ware is safe, but if you can try to spend a little more money and get the non stick kind that does not have the Teflon on it. I have a set that does not have it, and it is great, and you can use metal utensil's in it. Go to a good quality kitchen ware store to but it. It will last longer, and your food will turn out better.

It is safer now than it used to be. The old styles would have the nonstick finish to start to come off whne cooking, but the newer versions do not peel like the old one.

it's safe as long as there are no chips in trhe surface, once that happens, you are exposed to more as the surface peels
