stay away from frozen dinners, sweets, drain canned vegetables and rinse with water (loaded with sodium). no potato's, corn, peas, butter beans, rice, pastas, cheese, pork, beef, milk, white bread, boxed dinners, butter, egg yolks (2 per week), sodas (1 caffeine free diet coke per day allowed), bottled juice drinks such as tomato juice, cole slaw, ketchup, mayo, miracle whip, A-1 sauce, heinz 57, cream, cool whip, most cereal, and frozen breakfast foods.
DRINK at least 8 glasses of water a day! it washes the sodium out of your system!
see your doctor about exercise. my doctor wants me to walk 3 miles at least 5 days a week.
there are ways to add certain foods to your diet on a weekly basis such as a small amount of lean pork or beef as well as some pasta, peas, beans, fresh corn, and sweet potato's.
try to find a real good cholesterol book to use!
good luck!

You should give them an overall low fat diet--that means lean meats (trim excess fat, not too much marbling of the meat--chicken is good and now pork is good too, also lean fishes--that means avoid lobster, shrimp and crab, which are high cholesterol sea food). It also means increasing vegetable intake, limiting things like butter, lard and similar fats, even margarine, but increasing use of olive oil is okay.
You should also consider cholesterol-reducing foods--oatmeal believe it or not can cut down cholesterol in the blood, especially steel cut oatmeal (as opposed rolled oats oatmeal). Increasing fiber can help so taking something like metamucil might be good.

"margarine" that helps to lower cholestrol levels - in Australia I know of 2 brands "Logicol" and "Pro-activ" (which is part of Flora brand). They are a bit more expensive but is recommended by doctors to help lower cholestrol absorption. As far as I can tell the active ingredients are plant sterols (phytosterol esters) - whatever they may be.
Apparently you need at least 25 gms per day, i.e. equal to what you would spread on about 4 slices of bread. Having more than 25 gms does not give additional benefits. It is said if you use it everyday you can get your cholestrol down by 10 percent in 3 weeks.
Hope you find some where you are.

Supposedly oatmeal can actually lower cholesterol.
In regards to what NOT to eat cheese can really make cholesterol higher so that's a good thing NOT to eat if you have high cholesterol. I used to have really low cholesterol and was not eating cheese at all and then I started eating goat's cheese a lot and next time I had my cholesterol checked it was high so that has lead me to believe that cheese can definitely make cholesterol higher.
Eggs do not necessarily make cholesterol higher. I used to eat an egg everyday and still had very low cholesterol.
Some of the medications given for high cholesterol have bad side effects so be wary of that.

Oat bran!
Correct the problem with diet and exercise if at all possible. However, understand that your body naturally produces cholesterol. Unfortunately, some people have a genetic predisposition towards high cholesterol levels. In these people diet and exercise is sometimes not enough. In this case there are medications that can help.

Garlic!! is the best for high cholesterol. You can take it in pill form. ALso, a doctor tried upping her intake of fruits and veggies ALOT and it lowered her cholesterol substantially.
Omega-3 oils are very very good too. But get a prescription for it from your doctor because over the counter do not contain enough to make a real difference

What is Cholesterol? Cholesterol is a type of fat made by your liver. Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in all parts of your body. It helps make cell membranes, some hormones, and vitamin D. Cholesterol comes from two sources: your body and the foods you eat. Blood cholesterol is made in your liver. Your liver makes all the cholesterol your body needs. Dietary cholesterol comes from animal foods like meats, whole milk dairy foods egg yolks, poultry, and fish. Eating too much dietary cholesterol can make your blood cholesterol go up. Foods from plants, like vegetables, fruits, grains, and cereals, do not have any dietary cholesterol.

Many fruits and vegtables. But some people can do everything and their cholesterol is still high. It is handed down from their parents. For those people they must be on a cholesterol lowering drug.
