I kinda agree with joecseko...we are not the only fat people on earth.
However....we have the highest amount of obesity BY FAR of any country in the world. I too have been really athletic since I was 6 years old or something...and I see it as a choice. Either I do something physically demanding or I don't. If I don't, I will get out of shape. And, if I eat too much....I will then be out of shape AND fat...like most of the Americans.
Do we have some of the fittest people in the world?? Yup. I don't disagree with that. In almost any sport, we have some of the top people. But, that doesn't negate the truth. We are a country filled with fat, out of shape, poor eaters who would rather do nothing than get themselves into any sort of physically demanding or stressful situation. Just take a look around these boards for the numbers of people who want to keep eating crap, do ZERO exercise, and look great.
Wanna look and feel great?? Well, you gotta get off yer a.s.s. and WORK at it. There are no shortcuts.

I love how the rest of the world loves to call us fat.I think that this phenomenon is fueled by jealosy and stereotyping.I'll try to think of a new topic for the rest of the world to pick on us for and post it on Yahoo! answers.
I am not now nor have ever been fat and would put my physique, speed, power and knowledge of diet and fitness against virtually anyone.
I guess being fat helps you win gold medals because th US does a pretty good job of that.I've competed in powerlifting and full contact Karate against people all over the world. We're certainly not the only fat ones.

One reason is our food. Much of the food we consume is processed, meaning the good stuff (fiber, vitamins, minerals) is 'processed' out of it. Another culprit is a lot of food contains high fructose corn syrup, which compels the body to make and store more fat. It is in a lot of our foods. We are also less active because of convenience - there are few things we do that require any physical exertion or activity, causing us to burn less calories and store more fat. When many foreigners come to the US and try to eat a similar diet as back home, their weight still creeps up as they add more processed foods into their diet. I've seen this with many of my foreign friends. They also adopt many of our bad habits. Exacerbating this is the increase in type-2, non-insulin dependent diabetes, which usually results because of poor eating habits and lack of physical activity. The increased level of insulin in the body makes it easier to store fat, but also hastens the erosion of the cusioning tissue in joints. Once this happens, it makes exercise painful or impossible, causing further problems. Just try to eat as many healthy meals as you can, but don't deprive yourself. And exercuse, but do something fun (riding a bike, hiking, weight training, etc). Even better to share it with a friend - you'll be more motivated.

Our eating habits were developed when most people worked long and hard and arduous hours on farms and in early factories. These habits haven't been adjusted to reflect the conveniences and much less energy needs of current work roles.
Fast food and general lack of exercise doesn't help either!

that's a pretty big generalization--overall americans tend to have more obesity problems than other countries, but there are a lot of highly active and fit americans. if you want to know why people are fat, then you would have many answers from unhealthy eating habits to thyroid problems. lighten up!

Why are too many Americans fat? Not all, okay? You know why: eat too much, fast food or otherwise, and don't move around much. Very simple equation.

I wondered this myself and then I went shopping in an American grocery store and there was a whole aisle dedicated to Hostess snack cakes.... in Canada we have a tiny shelf half full of Hostess products - not an entire aisle!!!
I decided that if I lived in the states, I'd be fat too!!!
