Ultra-vioilet light is a an electromagnetic wave sitting between visible light and x-rays. It's a bit smaller than the violet end of the visible spectrum (the bottom colour in the rainbow).

Being very energetic, UV can break chemical bonds, and change their behavior. Sunburn and ultimately skin cancer is caused by the disruptive effects of UV radiation on skin cells. The radiation damages DNA in the cells. The Sun emits a large amount of UV radiation, which could quickly turn Earth into a barren desert, but most of it is absorbed by the atmosphere's ozone layer before reaching the surface.
There are two types of UV radiation UVA and UVB. UVB is needed by the body and is one of the best ways to get Vitamin D, but too much of any radiation is bad for you. That nice little tan is your skin cooking. You can overcook and burn food the same happens to your skin and that's why you go all red and start peeling when you have sunburn. Not very nice!

it is a form of light waves that comes from the sun. It can be duplicated by light bulbs such as in tanning beds. The sun gives us Vitamin D which is very beneficial. Tanning beds just stimulate the melanin in the body. Melanin is what makes us tan. UV rays are mostly beneficial when coming from the Sun.

I actualyl went to the dermatologyst yesterday and he told me about this. UVB is what our bodys need for vitamin D and thats what makes us tan. UVA is what goes under our skin causeing dmage and sunspots and all the bad things that come out later in life like wrinkles. UVB is bad too in large doeses and when you get sun burns.

UV rays are light waves having shorter wavelengths than visible light and have a lot of energy. These rays can destroy skin and other tissues and can cause cancer.
