Not back in 2000....today. They sunk a ship, killed the captain, and are holding the survivors for trial.

They didn't sink the ship and I am not sure that it was the captain. The rest is unfortunately true.

Yeah I read that. Unfortunately 1) I live in Osaka and 2) I have to go to the Russian consulate tomorrow to pick up my Russian visa.

Last time I visited the Russian consulate there was a heavy police presence and I'm guessing it will be a bit heavier this time. Japanese right-wingers tend to send annonymous threats to various foreign embassies prompting the extra security, so I'm guessing this will set off a many more.

That being said it seems like a tricky issue. These islands have been contested for years and there have been incidents in the past. Of course now a life was taken so it should be interesting to see what happens. I feel that the Russians should make a public apology for the killing even thought it seems to be accidental.

As far as who actually has rights to the island is beyond me. I don't really feel like taxing my brain with more idiotic political bickering. Why can't get along and share dammit. Split the islands resources between the two based on consumption rates or somethin'....
