There is a man in a room. In this room there are two doors. One leads to freedom, the other, instant death. Infront of each door there is a guard. the one standing infront of the freedom door tells the truth and nothing but it. However the one infront of the death door will lie. You are aloud one question to ask just one of either guards to find out which door leads to freedom.
Im sorry but I dont know the answer, hence asking. Really doing my head in, and the guy who told me said he wouldnt tell me the answer for 12 months.

Can i just make clear you do not know which guard is infront of which door. so from answer 3 you cant ask the one telling the truth if hes telling the truth because he could be the liar saying he is the one telling the truth...

You ask one of the guards "if I ask that guy which door I should go through, which one would he choose",
you then pass through the other door.
Don't ask me how it works, but that's the answer on the Canadian site. Wish I knew how to cut and paste then I could direct you to it.
The other way is to go up to one of the guards and ask are you guarding this door - or, are you a guard, the liar will say no. It's obvious he is a guard so he must be the liar.

Ask one of the guards if he will let you through the door he is guarding. The one who is lying will say no so you will take the other door because you can't go through that one due to his answer to your question. The one who is telling the truth will say yes. Either way, you can only go through one door.

Ask the first guard "Which door will the other guard tell me is the door to freedom?"
Take the opposite door to the one he tells you!
The other people who have so far answered don't seem to realise that you don't know which guard tells the truth and which one lies. That's what makes it a riddle.

if you ask "What would the other guard answer if I asked him which door leads to instant death?" they would both tell you the same door and the other door would be the one to freedom. i really haven't explained that well..
note to other ansa's - you don't know which one is the liar and which one tells the truth!!

I take it you don't know which guard is which. If this is so then you should approach either guard and ask: "Would the other guard tell a lie?"
If you had asked the guard who lies the answer would be "yes".
If you had asked the guard who tells the truth the answer would be "yes". You simply then have to take a guess

ask one guard what door the other one would tell you to go through, and take the opposite one.
because if you ask the guard who lies, he will tell you that the truthful guard will tell you to go through the door to death. (this is a lie) and if you ask the truthful guard he will tell you that the lying guard will tell you to go through the door to death. it works either way, you are directed to the door to deat so you go therough the one to freedom.

The 2nd answer by Iain T. is correct.
The liar would tell you that the other guard would point to the death door.
The truthful guard would say that the liar would also point to the death door.
Therefore, you take the other one.

Ask either guard what the other would say.
The one who tells the truth knows the other would lie, so says the wrong door.
The one who lies knows the other would tell the truth so lies and also says the wrong door.
You can ask either one this question and know you'll get the wrong answer.
