Purnima is a beautiful name used vastly in India. I myself love this name as it depicts Full Moon. Just tell her not to worry about the caste...the name suggests she is a Hindu...and thats all that matters. Atleast she knows she was born to a Hindu and should take pride in it. Although according to me she could be Mangalorean..

Well, Its extremely hard , if not impossible to find the state. The caste , though, can be easily found. I ran a check but failed to turn up anything substantial. At least that surname is not common in the parts of India that I hail from and I can say that for at least for the state of UP (which is the biggest in terms of population). So now, we have around 167 million people less to worry about! I should know since my roots lie there.
You could do the following:
a.) Contact the organization through which you adopted her.
b.) Run an ad in a big newspaper. (You may attract a lot of fakes too!)
c.) Scourge the net.
I did the last but could not turn up with anything productive. I guess I did find a posting by you in one of the forums though!
Wish I could help more.

try Sikh or Hindi religions. Maybe yellow pages under churches. They may be able to direct you. An Indian consulate?
Good luck
