Go to a subway booth, ask for a subway map, buy a unlimited Metrocard card(I'm sure you are going to be out all day, so this is the best one), hop on the train and go where you want to go. You can also ask people for directions and have them show you the way on the map, you'll be surprised how helpful us New Yawkers can be.

Easy, you buy a metro card, eother $2.00 a ride or ullimited daily, weekly, monthly, and enter the subway at a station. You can travel and change trains until you reach your destination. Also, you can change to the City bus for free.
