1. Exercise
Exercise is probably the key to losing weight. Not only does it burn calories but you actually find that it helps to make the necessary change in diet that you probably need to make. Make it a goal to achieve one hour of continuous cardio every second day. Start out at 15-20 minutes and add 5 minutes every two workout periods. Start out doing something easy - even if you can only walk for 15 minutes. Duration is much more important than intensity. Many people (men esp.) go straight into a 20 twenty minute run and end up having aching knees, hips, ankles that prevent them from continuing (sometimes for weeks). In time, increase the intensity to cycling .. .or walking interspersed with jogging. Eventually, if you can, work up to continuous jogging or swimming. Running is a superb way to lose weight but for many people it is difficult because the muscles in the legs (esp. knees and ankles) are not prepared for that sort of vigorous exercise. That is precisely why you need to slowly increase exercise - the muscles need to strengthen to manage the intensity. In you work your way up to 1 hour of continuous running, cycling, swimming or cardio machine (rowing maching, elliptical, nordic track) every second day - you WILL lose weight.
If you are not much of an athelete.. try and make little alterations in your lifestyle. Anything to be active - mow the lawn, build the new fence, shovel snow, walk instead of driving, go dancing, try water or snow skiing. Try your hand at gardening. Take kids or nephews and nieces or friends tobogganing. Go camping, fishing, hiking. You get the idea.
2. Diet
Try and lower the amount of pure starches you eat - only very small amounts of potatoes, pasta, rice, etc. Veggies and lean meat are great. Fruit is fine... but try and water down fruit juices which are loaded with sugar (esp. from concentrate). Never have seconds - this one guideline was one of the most important factors for my weight loss. As a culture we eat far more than we need. Only have desserts when you've 'earned them' say three days of exercise = one dessert. Again .. no seconds on dessert.
And drink lots of water... often when you think you are hungry your body actually needs to be hydrated.
I hope this is helpful.

First off the BMI paints with a large brush...and just because it says you're a couple of pounds overweight, doesn't mean that have to go out and drastically change your lifestyle...
That being said, if you want to lose weight, the best way to do it is to eat healthy, cut out excess carbs and fatty foods, and make exercise a part of your daily routine....Fad diets actually do work, but only as long as you stay on their plan, so even though you may lose weight with them, they aren't a good solution.... Weight Watchers has a very sensible plan if you're looking for some guidelines to follow.

Yes, doing your own BMI is painting with a very wide brush. You can be heavier, but not fat. Is your weight due to large bone structure? Are you muscular? Read all you can about weight loss and incorporate those things that you think will work for you. Is this something temporary to lose a few pounds or will you need to continue the weight loss behaviors for the rest of your life? Do what you can life with to keep the weight off.

the healthiest diet you can do is Weight Watchers. I have lost 70 lbs and my bp and cholesterol are totally normal now. those crazy pills and short-term diets like Atkins and South Beach are not healthy and only good for short term. you might lose weight, but don't keep it off for long.
also drink lots of water and do some sort of exercise.

It really works. Don't diet. You'll gain it all back.

Weight lifting! Muscle burns more calories than fat at a resting rate.
A good diet helps as well! Here is an article for you...

It also depends on how muscular you are. Muscle weights more than fat so if you are all muscle, those charts are a load of bull.

Drink lots of water coz it helps with burnin fat....
