It is not the idea of God dying, it is religion that people are pulling away from, religion has become nothing more than a multi billion dollar business all in the name of God. God dose not has not and will not ask for a single dime from his flock, I pray to him daily and have never received a bill.

I think as humans are understanding their enviroment more and more they are learning there is actually no "higher" power. I don't think the idea of G-d will ever die or be forgotten because there are people out there that will still need to be led even if there is evidence G-d doesn't exist. So they will keep believing no matter what. However, I think in the future more people will reject "G-d" as new discoveries are made about creation and more evidence is uncovered.

Though I'm not sure what exactly you're asking, how about this: the Idea of God is evolving? That ought to spark some controversy, no? But I think that it may be true for the world in general.
