So it has to stand up like a wedding cake? You can use either round or square pans. I don't know how many you are planning for but here is a med wedding cake. I would bake 2 thick layers of the biggest,2 of mid size and 2 or 3 of the smallest size pans and stack accordingly with filling in between each layer as normal. You would need to put 3 dowel rods into the cake nearer the center but spaced out to support the next layer. Put a separater plate between the different size layers so they won't sag and to keep it stable.Repeat the dowels and plates on each layer. Then you can cut away pieces to make the slopes and valleys, etc. It would look great to get a plasic set of skiers and decorate them like the bride and groom and have them going down the mt., if they are skiers. You will have to use a thin frosting to make the first covering and wet your knife often in water to help smooth the icing very easily or you will have crumbs getting mixed in. Do a second layer with the reg icing after the 1st layer has dried. You could do a nice edging of med or large scallops/shells around the bottom of the mt on the plate. Frost it with white icing using the clear vanilla so it won't yellow! You don't want yellow snow! You won't have to worry about getting it so smooth because it is suppose to be fluffy snow. You might could use some blue icing gel to make a small pond. Use a small tip to edge it ,with the white frosting, like drifts. Put a log beside for seating and someone (maybe dressed like the best man and maid of honor)ice skating on the pond. Then you can use springs of fake(allergies)evergreens for trees and also bare branches from the tip ends of real tree branches for the trees that have lost their leaves. I used to decorate but my hands won't let me now. My sister does it for the public and we have had some very interesting cakes over the years!I hope yours works out! It sounds like fun!

crazy idea - but i think it just may work.
bake a sheet cake and dozens of cupcakes. ice the sheet cake and then start "building your mountain" with the cupcakes. use icing to "glue the mountain" together. break the cupcakes up a little to get the shape of the mountain and formations you are wanting. then ice the "mountain of cupcakes" in the colors of the mountain of your choosing. ie. green, brown, a little white for snow, maybe a light blue stream of water going down the mountain, etc.
at the top maybe you can have the bride and groom in hiking boots with a little flag with a heart on it that shows they have made it to the top!
good luck, have fun and let your creativity flow!

How about Devil's Tower, like they did in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He didn't make a cake, but he did make it with mashed potatos.
